The Art of Roland Hayes

Hayes´ Lieder-Repertoire erstreckte sich von Dowland und Monteverdi über Schubert, Beethoven und Mozart, Mussorgsky, Debussy und Wolf bis hin zu Villa-Lobos und selbst komponierten Spirituals, die er in fast jedem Konzert als Zugaben sang. In einem Opernhaus konnte er nicht auftreten. Er ebnete auch den Weg für die kommende Generation: Er half jungen, farbigen Sängern ihre Karrieren zu starten, gab Gesangsunterricht und manchmal sogar finanzielle Unterstützung: "Ich habe all dies begonnen. Ihr dürft nicht stehen bleiben, wo ich aufgehört habe - ihr müsst weiter gehen." Hayes's repertoire of lieder ranged from Dowland and Monteverdi to Schubert, Beethoven and Mozart, Mussorgsky, Debussy and Wolf and all the way to Villa-Lobos. He also wrote arrangements of spirituals, which he performed as encores at almost every concert. While Hayes also sang opera arias in his concerts, he never performed in an opera house. But he did open doors for the generation that followed, helping young black singers to launch their careers, giving them vocal instruction and sometimes even financial support. "I started all this.... Now, you can't stop where I stopped; you've got to go on."
