A Tribute to Giuseppe Verdi 200. Geburtstag

Today, hardly anyone will deny Don Carlo, Aida, Otello and Falstaff the status of a masterpiece. Verdi's early works, on the other hand, as well as the operas from his middle period suffer constant criticism and are considered somewhat lowbrow: musical immaturity, banal "oompah" rhythms, lousy libretti and incomprehensible plots. True in many cases ? but as performance history shows, in the long term the genius of Verdi's music has triumphed over these deficiencies: Rigoletto, Il trovatore, La traviata; Un ballo in maschera and La forza dei destino are performed regularly and even Nabucco, Ernani, Macbeth, Simon Boccanegra and I vespri siciliani again and again find their way to the playbills of many international opera houses ? if adequate casts can be found. How many composers could claim the same of so many of their "youthful misdeeds"?
