The Groundhogs' last great Festival show at Anti WAA Festival 1989
The year 1989 was a quiet year for The Groundhogs. They took a break from touring to concentrate on recording and studio work. But, a call from their promoter and then managerRoland Hofmann, reached them to play one of Germany's biggest festivals - the Anti WAA Festival 1989 to protest against a nuclear reprocessing plant in Bavaria.Roland did the booking for this festival and had many great artists confirmed, such as Ten Years After, Robert Cray, Al Stewart, Herman Brood, Blue Cheer, Udo Lindenberg and many others. Among them also Bob Dylan's former backing band and Americana superstars The Band, from the USA. Unfortunately The Band had to cancel, due to Rick Danko's (r.i.p.) bad health. So Roland called The Groundhogs to fill in for them short notice. The Hogs were ecstatic about the chance to play to a crowd of approx. one hundred thousand people and agreed to interrupt their sabbatical year. They were set to play at a not so favourable time around noon on Sunday the 16th of July. Many people were still in their tents on the camping site after a long saturday night. The Groundhogs took the stage at approx. 11.30 am and completely brought the house downThe two third empty space in front of the stage filled within minutes when the people realized what mega act was given to them. By halfway through The Groundhogs' set, the space was jam packed and the crowd was cheering this sensational band.Later that night Tony McPhee even joined in with Blue Cheer, whose manager was also The Groundhogs', Roland Hofmann. They performed a storming version of "Hoochie Coochie Man".Both, The Groundhogs' as well as Blue Cheer's shows can be heard on cd and also on dvd, released by Nibelung Records. This was the last time the Groundhogs ever played one of the great festivals to a massive crowd.
