Desire

SPERENZI’s album cover shows a young man standing amid giant, lichen-covered boulders and staring into the indigo abyss that is the night sky. The Milky Way hangs above him, and the solid earth stands beneath him. He is small. The scene around him dwarfs his body, his mind, his worries, his wants and his needs, and he is in awe of it. It appears as though he could suddenly be swallowed-up by this place, that he could become part of its vastness - another point of light in the night. Instead, however, he remains. He stands still, feet firmly planted, and begins to realize that he is part of it all.
Using a vast, starry sky as their backdrop, SPERENZI has created a record that expresses a relentless urge for connection, sense of place, and purpose. Synthesizers swirl, grind and pulsate in a sort of cosmic harkening, painting a grand soundscape that contrasts with the warm intimacy of the emotive vocals. The drums and bass are the anchor of the music, steadfastly grounding the dramatic flourishes and headiness. The music is a combination of contrasts; it is heavy and light, light and dark, joy and despair, fire, water, earth and air. The elements play a strong role in the lyrics, emphasizing the importance of a connection to nature and origins. While the songs were created in a small town in the Austrian Alps, it is no wonder that they refer to landscape, nature and the wild. Writing music in this setting means that you are constantly reminded that you must pay homage to it; to the power of the mountains, the window of sky between them, and the weather that brews above and traverses the peaks and valleys. The music, while touching on big themes like love, lust, loss, and grief, always finds its way back to an overarching expression of smallness - the lone man on a big rock gazing into an infinite sky.
