Skumbollar release new single “She never called”
After the successful release of their first album of original songs, “Swedish Vibes”, Skumbollar are surprisingly following it up with another release. The Swedish ABBA cover band from Gothenburg are now presenting their new single “She never called”, a song that was actually never planned. There is a simple reason why it is being released after all: the story behind it touched the three musicians so much that they did not want to leave the song unheard.Skumbollar, consisting of Alma Lindgren, Elsa Bergqvist and Lars Svensson, have recently attracted considerable attention in the German-speaking market with their own music. “Summer Love in the Breeze” reached number one in the German Listener Charts, while “Look into my eyes” climbed to number two in “Die Hörercharts”. The path the group, founded in 2013, has taken with their own songs has therefore started much more successfully than originally expected. After the strong run of their first album, the three musicians had actually not planned to release new music so soon. Then songwriter Imiak Khan got in touch with Skumbollar. He had discovered the band through their chart success and sent them lyrics based on a personal story. The lyrics of “She never called” immediately caught Skumbollar's attention. Together with their label Swedish Treats Music, they eventually turned the lyrics into a finished song. What began as an unexpected encounter therefore became a new single.“She never called” tells the story of a love that does not simply fall apart because of an argument or some great dramatic event, but mainly because one person never takes that crucial step. A woman remains on the man's mind, but the call he is hoping for never comes, and he keeps trying while she blocks every attempt to reach her. It is precisely this mixture of hope, pride and disappointment that gives the song its special appeal.Musically, Skumbollar remain true to their own sense of Swedish lightness. The story itself is certainly painful, but the song never feels heavy or gloomy. Instead, the band conveys the heartbreak with emotion, a catchy melody and the Swedish pop touch that has increasingly become part of their own musical identity. And perhaps the story behind “She never called” is not over yet. Who knows, maybe the blonde woman from the song will eventually pick up the phone after all. For songwriter Imiak Khan, that would certainly be a beautiful ending to his personal story. With “She never called”, Skumbollar once again show that they are much more than a band performing the great ABBA classics on stage. Their work as an ABBA cover band remains an important part of their musical identity. At the same time, their original songs are opening a second chapter for the group, one that is increasingly gaining attention in the German-speaking market.
