A New Side of the Dragon

A New Side of the Dragon is exactly what the title suggests: a different side of Shogun Y.
The album brings together new interpretations of songs from his own catalogue, some of them written years ago and now completely reworked from a new musical perspective. The original melodies and ideas remain at the heart of the songs, but the arrangements have been rebuilt around rhythm, groove and a more contemporary sound.
Afrobeats is an important influence throughout the album, but it is not used as a strict formula. Some tracks lean more towards pop or dance, others bring in elements of blues or hip-hop. Brass, percussion, backing vocals and warm rhythmic arrangements help give the album its character, while the songwriting and melodies remain central.
That balance was important. The aim was not simply to modernize older material, but to discover what else these songs could become. In some cases the new arrangements changed the mood considerably; in others they brought out details in the melodies that had been less obvious before.
The album moves between energetic, direct tracks and more reflective moments. It does not try to smooth everything into one uniform sound. Instead, the different songs are allowed to keep their individual character while still belonging to the same musical world.
For Shogun Y, A New Side of the Dragon is therefore less a change of direction than a new perspective on his own music. It combines earlier songwriting with new arrangements, African-inspired rhythms, strong melodies and modern production, showing how songs can develop when they are approached again from a completely different angle.
