Scott Paterson - Things Gonna Change

The story behind the song The song is just an analysis from a historical perspective about the cynical nature of change. The use of the word "spring" was a nod to the Arabs and their new beginnings. "Sold folks standing here in chains" is a line about the terrible history of Wall Street and the buying and selling of slaves there, and still we are slaves to Wall Street it seems. The chorus just reiterates the idea there's a certain inevitability to change. "The sun never setting" line is a reference to England and is empire and of course its decline. "We built the hill of gold" is just a reference to the acquisition of wealth for no other reason and the resistance to distribute wealth around the world. "We drank a river dry" refers to our insatiable need. "10,000 ships" refers to the pillaging of the world's resources from poor countries to rich. "The old boat" I guess refers to us. And of course it never has been "cheap to run an empire" It eventually tips over under its own weight. The line "short the market" is a reference to the fact that so many young people now in America are not getting into sciences and math, but are pursuing MBAs because that's the quickest way to get rich. “The girl with that thing in the air" is about the Statue of Liberty and the words on her tablet. I fancied somehow her selling out to some colossal stone statue of gold in lower Manhattan who had wooed her with a diamond necklace. I wrote this simple little song just to support change. From my little place on this Earth to yours ... ....above all else, peace Scott Paterson
