Essentially from the same mould as Texan blues boogie supremos ZZ Top

Essentially from the same mould as Texan blues boogie supremos ZZ Top, Point Blank’s first two releases were produced by Bill Ham, who had also masterminded the latter band’s rise to fame. Point Blank’s line-up has been somewhat fluid, but in the main it featured John O’Daniel (vocals), Rusty Burns (guitar), Kim Davis (guitar), Bill Randolph (bass), Mike Hamilton (keyboards) and Buzzy Gren (drums). Their third venture into the recording studio resulted in Airplay, which saw a slightly less intensive boogie stance, but this was rectified on The Hard Way, a part-live release that saw the band in blistering form. Bobby Keith replaced John O’Daniel in 1981 and their last two albums reflected a more radio-friendly approach to their sound, but without commercial success.
With the success of their eponymous debut recording, Point Blank had a reasonable amount of momentum heading into the studio to record Second Season. But rather than rearrange or pepper things up a bit in the recording process, Point Blank pretty much stay the same as they did for their first record: a five-piece (they ditched the keyboardist) writing songs around crunchy blues guitar riffs that resemble a hybrid of British hard rock (Zeppelin, Deep Purple) and Southern rock. As a result, there really isn't much improvement over the first album (save for the removal of the cheesy, pun-infected cover art, replaced by the lads in the band "taking it easy" in the backyard, complete with yellow sunlit soft-focus photography). It's not the worst album in the Point Blank catalog, but it certainly isn't the best. For die-hard fans and Southern rock fanatics only.

Second Season is an absolute Southern Rock gem rangeing from Django Reinhardt type guitar work as in "Part Time Lover" to heavy boogie southern rockers and filigrane guitar work throughout.
