Pocket Philosophy

Peekaboo, this means a „confident instinct for melodies and classical pop“, as the Austrian newspaper der standard put it, good songwriting, personality and recognisability. However, on the band´s second album “Pocket Philosophy” the classical pop song is often complemented by tracks, which primarily convey moods, preferably with strings, piano and accoustic guitar. The preeminent atmosphere of the songs is a peculiar melancholy, but without any pathos. Lyrics full of irony, sarcasm and understatement describe protagonists who could have jumped right out of a book by Nick Hornby. Peekaboo was founded in 2001 in Vienna, Austria. During the next three years the band released two demos, which met with a friendly response by both media and concert organisers. Peekaboo became a busy live band and songs appeared on various samplers. In 2004 the debut album „Seriously Kidding“ (Homebase Records) was released, and the song „I Pretend“ rotated on FM4, Austria´s alternative radio station. In 2004/05 the band toured all over the country. Concerning the next years opinions differ: “They worked intensively on the second album”, the romantics say, “They worked intensively on other music and comedy projects and simply forgot to break up”, the cynics. Anyway, the album was suddenly finished and the band screamed with surprise: “By Jove, it´s not particularly bad! And because that´s the case, let us be full-time-peekaboys again!” ---------------------------------------------- Peekaboo, das ist gitarrenlastiger Indie-PopRock der spannenden Sorte. Will heißen: ein „sicherer Instinkt für Melodien und klassischen Pop“ (Der Standard), gutes Songwriting, Persönlichkeit und Wiedererkennungsfaktor. Auf dem zweiten Album Pocket Philosophy weicht der klassische Popsong dagegen oft Stücken, die in erster Linie Stimmungen transportieren, gerne mit Streichern, Klavier und Akustikgitarre. Eine eigentümliche Melancholie durchzieht das Album, abgeklärt und ein wenig altersweise vielleicht, aber niemals altklug oder larmoyant. Texte voll Ironie, Sarkasmus und Understatement beschreiben Protagonisten, die direkt einem Nick Hornby-Roman entsprungen sein könnten. Peekaboo wurde 2001 in Wien gegründet. Nach zwei Demo-CDs erschien 2004 das Debutalbum Seriously Kidding (Homebase Records), das sowohl bei Medien als auch Veranstaltern auf ein äußerst positives Echo stieß. Der Song I Pretend rotierte auf FM4, und die Tour zum Album führte das Quartett 2004/05 durch ganz Österreich. Über die nächsten Jahre gehen die Meinungen auseinander: „Sie arbeiteten intensiv am zweiten Album“, sagen die Romantiker, „Sie arbeiteten intensiv an anderen Musik- bzw. Kabarettprojekten und vergaßen schlicht die Band aufzulösen“, die Zyniker. Fest steht, dass plötzlich das Album fertig war, und die Band überrascht ausrief: „Ei der Taus! Schön ist es geworden! Und weil das so ist, sind wir wieder hauptberuflich Peekabuben!
