Paddlecell - Spooky Jones - Horror-Ska & Psychobilly
PaddlecellFounded in 1997 in Wuppertal, Paddlecell combines old-school psychobilly with fast offbeat rhythms and an explosive blend of driving beats, dark brass sections, and gritty vocals. Frontman Marc, whose deep and powerful voice is reminiscent of Sparky from Demented Are Go, fits perfectly into the band’s dynamic sound, driven by slap bass, wild drums, and rockabilly guitars. This mix of different elements results in a unique style that Paddlecell calls “Horror-Ska” – a powerful, high-energy fusion that transcends the boundaries of psychobilly, ska, and rockabilly.Another defining member was Frank Mayerl, whose virtuosity on the slap bass enriched Paddlecell’s music until his passing. Also known from the Wuppertal Rockabilly band The Cruisers, Frank left a lasting impact on the band and the scene.Paddlecell has performed not only in Germany but also in France, Austria, Finland, England, and Spain (Calella) at major Psychobilly festivals. The band has shared the stage with numerous renowned Ska and Psychobilly acts, just to name a few: The Selecter, Rude and Visser, Hotknives, Rude Rich & The Highnotes, Bad Manners, Scamps, Mad Sin, Batmobile, Mad Dog Cole, and Frenzy. These international shows solidified their reputation and established Paddlecell as a fixture in the European scene.Despite their success and the high demand for concerts, the band could not always fulfill all requests, which led to several lineup changes. After a longer break and the addition of new musicians, Paddlecell returned to the stage in 2014 as a reunited band stronger than ever. A familiar face from Ray Collins’ Hot-Club joined Paddlecell, bringing fresh energy into the group. With this renewed strength, Paddlecell continues to appeal to fans of 2-Tone, Ska-Punk, and Psychobilly who seek fast, intense music. Their collaboration with The Toasters, whose horn section supports the band live, as well as saxophonist DJ on the current album Spooky Jones, demonstrates how their Horror-Ska sound has become established and continues to excite a loyal fanbase.Paddlecell delivers a high-energy, distinctive listening experience that combines variety, intensity, and pure joy of playing a mix that resonates with both long-time fans and new listeners alike.Releases:2002 – Demo Tape2006 – Cool Babe (Halb7 Records)2006 – Paddlecell (Debütalbum, Crazy Love Records)2007 – Area 51 (Halb7 Records)2011 – Magazin-Beitrag: Dynamite 49 – Cat Rock2017 – Sometimes We Come Back!
