Lebendige Vergangenheit

Born in 1920 in Pittsburgh, USA, she studied singing in Los Angeles with Lotte Lehmann, among others. As a teenager, already, she was singing on radio and film soundtracks. Sir Laurence Olivier hired her for a 1940 US tour to appear during the scene changes. After Toscanini heard her for the first time, this was the beginning of an association that lasted many years. Despite the publicity she received because of Toscanini, a career in her home country remained closed to her. After her stage debut with the Cincinnati Summer Opera as Cieca in Ponchielli’s La gioconda, and a successful activity in American concert halls, she went to Europe. She made her European debut in 1950 in a Paris concert and appeared at the festivals of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Aix-en-Provence, Glyndebourne, Edinburgh and at the Piccola Scala Milano. The role that firmly established her fame was Dorabella in Mozart’s Così fan tutte. In 1965 she married the Dutch tenor Tom Brand and ended her career.
