Lebendige Vergangenheit - Marko Rothmüller

Geboren 1908 in Kroatien, in der Nähe von Zagreb nahm er nach seinem Debut 1932 aufgrund der Machtübernahme der NAZIS von 1935-47 ein Engagement am Züricher Opernhaus an. Er glänzte dort als Mozart-, Wagner, Verdi-Bariton und wirkte in einigen zeitgenössischen Werken mit, u.a. in Hindemiths „Mathis der Maler“ (UA 1938), aber auch als Konzert- und Liedsänger. Bald nach dem Krieg setzte seine internationale Laufbahn ein: 1946/47 gehörte er der Wiener Staatoper an, ein Gastspiel an der Covent Garden Opera als Jochanaan in „Salome“ begründete seine Karriere in England. Gastspiele führten ihn u.a. an die Pariser Oper und an die Berliner Staatsoper; er wirkte bei den Festspielen in Edinbourgh und Glyndebourne mit und sang von 1948-52 an der New York City Opera, sowie 1959/60 und 1964/65 an der Metropolitan Oper. Bis in die Sechzigerjahre gab er Gastspiele in Europa und übernahm ab 1955 eine Professur an der Indiana University in Bloomington, wo er bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1993 blieb. Born in Croatia, near Zagreb, in 1908 he made his debut in 1932 and after the NAZIS had come to power he moved on to the Zurich Opera. From 1935-47 he excelled in Mozart, Wagner and Verdi baritone roles, as well as in contemporary works: in Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler (world premiere of the stage version in 1938), among others. Soon after the war he launched his international career: in 1946-47 he was a member of Vienna’s Staatsoper, a guest performance at the Covent Garden Opera in 1947 as Jochanaan in “Salome” was the basis for his career in England. Guest appearances also took him to the Paris Opéra and the Berlin Staatsoper and appeared at the Festivals in Edinburgh and Glyndebourne. From 1948-52 he sang at the New York City Opera, and in the 1959/60 and 1964/65 was a member of New York’s Metropolitan Opera. In 1955 Rothmüller accepted a professorship at Indiana University in Bloomington but continued to appear in Europe into the 1960s. He died in Bloomington in 1993.
