MUSIC LEGENDS ARE CELEBRATED WITH A SPECIAL SONG

What happens when an award-winning Country singer and a seasoned radio presenter decide to join forces to honour music legends?

A beautiful radio hit is created that promises to be just as popular as the people it is about.

“Overvaal Stereo’s Ignaz Streicher did an interview with me at a big Country Festival and mentioned that he would like to record a song with me in honour of the musical legends in the local industry,” shares the beloved singer, Maritza about this special project. “After giving it some thought, I let him know that Bruno Andries and I were working on something. This is how Ons Legendes was born.”

“As a radio presenter, I get to work with various artists. During Lance James’ funeral I came to realize that although we appreciate these people, we may not show it to them enough. When Sally Vaughn died, I decided that I wanted to do something special for these legends, so that those of them who are still alive can experience it,” Ignaz adds. “I am not a singer and did not even know where to start. Within a week after Maritza and I talked about this, the song was written.”

Both Maritza and Ignaz believe that Ons Legendes will resonate with listeners, as most of them grew up with the music of the nineteen legends mentioned in the song and it will also make them feel nostalgic.

Lockdown also made them realize how tough things currently are for musicians in our country, and they decided to donate all profits generated by the song to the legends that are still alive.

The single is complemented by a striking music video that will be available soon. It was filmed at the Oakhurst Insurance George Arts Theatre and viewers are taken on a journey to the past.

“Ironically enough, the video was shot during a time when the theatre was still closed to the public. It touched my soul to work there and know that it was closed. It made me realize that it was up to the public to keep the industry’s doors open,” says Ignaz.

Maritza has been working in the music industry for the past fifty years and has released several hits and albums Blonde Visserman, Ek is lief vir die wêreld, My Hart Sing Van Liefde, Koemadoe, Blou van Onthou and more) and won numerous music awards, including Sarie and Melodie Awards, during the course of her career.

She owns two art galleries (Gallop Hill Gallery), one in Sedgefield and one in Franschhoek, and enjoys living anonymously in a coastal town on the Garden Route.

Ignaz has been a radio presenter for sixteen years and has had the privilege of working with the best local and international artists.

Highlights of his career include being an ambassador and master of ceremonies for BZN’s last performance as a group and the privilege of working with Jan Keizer and Amy Schilder before their decision to retire from the music industry.

He currently lives in Viljoenskroon and feels blessed to be able to do what he loves every day and to entertain people with the most beautiful music that radio has to offer.

Ons Legendes was created to pay tribute to the stars who were responsible for establishing the South African music industry and hopefully this special song will touch enough hearts to also be remembered for many years to come.
