IKONA – Music of Silence and Prayer by Lukáš Borzík
IKONA by Slovak composer Lukáš Borzík is a large-scale vocal-instrumental chamber work for soprano, tenor and string quartet inspired by the spiritual symbolism of the icon and the inner world of contemplation. The composition is built as a cycle of twelve musical prayers — The Prayer to the 12 Virtues of Silence — reflecting themes such as silence, listening, humility, joy, attention, waiting, balance, obedience, stability, purity, trust and mercy. The work unfolds as a deeply contemplative musical meditation in which the human voice and string quartet merge into a single expressive organism. The album is complemented by the work Alleluia, a contrasting yet closely related composition for the same instrumentation. While Ikona represents an inward journey into silence and inner transformation, Alleluia brings a musical image of mystical joy and praise. Together, the two works form a unified spiritual and musical arc based on contemplation, prayer and inner reflection. The recording was made in the acoustic space of the Jesuit Church of St Francis Xavier in Skalica, whose natural reverberation and atmosphere form an essential part of the musical expression. The interpretation was entrusted to leading Slovak performers — soprano Hilda Gulyás, tenor Matúš Šimko and the ZOE Quartet — musicians closely associated with the performance of contemporary Slovak music. The music of Lukáš Borzík is characterized by long melodic lines, inner proportional balance and a contemplative musical language often associated with the tradition of sacred minimalism. The album IKONA presents a deeply personal musical statement focused on the themes of silence, prayer and inner transformation.
