Jealousy, the children of Iraq and a happy, powerful dance song.
About half a year ago, I was watching the news and there was a report on the situation in Iraq. The terrible thing is, I didn't even notice the details- how many people had been killed, or by whom, or who was involved in the fighting. One detail, however, fascinated me: The camera was following a truck transporting some troops who were armed to the teeth, and in the background you could see some children sitting off by the roadside. They were unbelievably lighthearted, unimpressed and taking no notice of the horror all around them. They were using some kind of metal and some bottles as they played, somewhat like a xylophone made of glass. And then the report was over, and the next began, about a murder that had been committed out of jealousy. It all seemed so strange to me; I thought of how life would be so much easier for us than for those poor children in Iraq. If only we could be lighthearted in difficult situations, all of these catastrophes wouldn't be necessary. Suddenly there was a melody of bells in my head, and then a beat, and I saw people dancing instead of fighting.

Vor ungefähr einem halben Jahr sah ich in den Nachrichten einen Bericht über die Situation im Irak. Furchtbar, die Details habe ich nicht einmal genau wahrgenommen: Wie viele Menschen von wem diesmal umgebracht wurden - keine Ahnung. Aber eine Nebensache hat mich irrsinning fasziniert: Während die Kamera einen Lastwagen verfolgte, auf dem schwer bewaffnete Soldaten transportiert wurden, sah man am Strassenrand Kinder sitzen. Mit einer unglaublichen Unbeschwertheit, völlig unbeeindruckt von dem ganzen Grauen um sie herum, spielten sie mit einem Metallgegenstand auf leeren Flaschen, wie auf einem gläsernen Xylophon. Der Bericht war zu Ende. Danach kam eine Meldung über einen Eifersuchtsmord in Wien. Da dachte ich: Eigentlich sollten wir es so viel leichter haben als diese Kinder im Irak. Könnten wir diese Unbeschwertheit fühlen, wenn wir in einer schwierigen Situation sind, wären all die Katastrophen nicht nötig. Und plötzlich war da diese Glockenmelodie in meinem Kopf. Und ein Beat. Und ich sah die Menschen tanzen statt kämpfen.
