Sensational live recording of progressive rock heroes Atomic Rooster
"I always demand a band that's got a prettyA standard every bloody night." said Vincent Crane, at a turning point of his progressive rock outfit Atomic Rooster in 1972. To reach this task he assembled some of the most accomplished musicians availabe at that time:Rick Parnell on drums, Steve Bolton on guitars and star singer Chris Farlowe on vocals. This line-up performed and recorded this live recording here. Not everyone welcomed the direction of the new Atomic Rooster with a more Soul- and Blues-and Jazz-tinged sound, due to Farlowe's dominant vocals, as the audience knew it from his solo efforts and his engagement with Jazzrock supergroup Colosseum. This line-up around keyboard wizard Vicenet Crane recorded two studio albums - "Made in England" and "Nice 'n' Greasy". The band, still popular as a live act, portrayed a much more Soul-,Blues-, Jazz-tinged sound. Accordingly record sales dropped considerably.Crane, in retrospect, defended Farlowe's enlistment: "Chris wasn't quite right for the band, but he was a boost and Rooster needed him at the time. It was me who wrote the songs specifically for his voice. I didn't want Chris to sing like previous band vocalists."Crane's fusion of James Brownish Soul with progressive Rock may not have worked in those clear cut days, but it can be heard on this live recording, that the new songs, together with re-workings of old material set a standard for the future.
