My Polish Heart – Wolf Kerschek

What kind of music does the composer Wolf Kerschek, who writes the arrangements for Helene Fischer to Rammstein, Martin Grubinger to FIFA anthem create, if he can be free from stylistic specifications and only follow his own musical heart? The answer is: Symphonic Jazz."My Polish Heart", written for the virtuoso pianist Vladyslav Sendecki, offers a fusion of symphonic sounds and improvisation, stylistic contrasts, associations and mental imagesFor Wolf Kerschek it was a strange feeling to travel to Poland for the first time: "My grandmother was a Polish translator, my father was born in Pomerania and came to northern Germany as a refugee. I do not speak the language, and yet I feel so connected to the people of this country. My father was one of the most generous and most emotional persons I ever met in my life, he certainly had as a child refugee from Pomerania in the cool northern part of Germany some difficulties with his "Slavic soul". So somehow I also have partially a "Polish Heart" in me.When I met Vladyslav Sendecki who I consider to be one of the greatest and most brilliant pianists of our time , and I got to know him better, I realized that there is a connection between him as a person and the endless freedom and emotional depth in the way he plays. So I called the Piano Concerto, which I wrote for him: “My Polish Heart”.The composer Wolf Kerschek describes himself as s "world musician", but the encounter with the Polish folklore and especially with Vladyslav Sendecki put a special chain of associations in transition:"Vladyslav Sendecki is my favorite pianist and I’ve always felt a special connection to him musically and also personally. He has an unparalleled depth and almost unlimited instrumental skills. I felt that there is more to this classically trained pianist than one can see, when he plays Jazz or with the Bigband. So I composed a piano concerto for him, that really explores the orchestral colors, and offers a lush playground for Vlady. What makes Vlady's way of playing so fascinating for me is that he is able to make music completely beyond all stylistic or technical restrictions and to create sound images with incomparable beauty, musical depth and passion, without fear of heartfelt romance or Sentimentality.Together we were able to create a new partnership between a composer and a soloists that goes far beyond what is usual in the field of jazz or the composition of solo concerts. Instead of rigid specifications concerning the way the Soloist should play, it is in this case rather a musical dialogue between composition and improvisation based on chains of association and jointly developed dramaturgy. The complete musical openness makes it possible for me to create extreme opposites, from polish folk music to romantic sounds with imaginary landscapes and to abstract sound patterns or archaic emotions, without losing the self-evident naturalness or the thrilling tension of over 40min. 2011, we were able to have a premiere in Katowice of “My Polish Heart" as "Double Concerto", with Tomasz Stańko and the National Symphony Orchestra of Polish Radio. Now I finally had the opportunity to record this piece of music in a new form, with the wonderful Hamburg Symphonic Orchestra on CD. For this, I was able to integrate further soloists of the NDR Bigband that are very special to me and give them the space to influence the music with their own personality and further promote the fusion of symphonic sound and improvisation.Despite the necessary vigor and uncompromisingness, the piano concerto didn’t lose the personal connection and the romance of a "Polish Heart".
