Giulietta Simionato - Portrait of a Legend

This CD provides a survey (although not a complete documentation) of her musical development and her most celebrated roles. It is an hommage to one of the most important mezzo-sopranos of the 20th century. Success did not come easily to her, but during her “big” years from 1956 to 1966 she was the undisputed number One in her repertoire. Her voice was noted for its dark timbre, the warm, full sound and a decidedly wide range accompanied by relatively good agility. Simionato’s repertoire ranged from works by the composers Gluck, Cimarosa and Mozart to Bellini, Rossini and Donizetti and on to Verdi, Mascagni, Ponchielli and Cilea, although at the height of her career she restricted her roles to a manageable number. The more she focussed on the heavy Verdi parts (Azucena, Ulrica and Amneris) the more her one weak point became evident: especially in later years, her weak middle register did not adequately link her soprano-like high range with her pronounced and sonorous low register. And yet, she compensated for this deficit with great intensity of expression and impressive stage presence and was amazingly consistent in singing at the highest level.
