Lebendige Vergangenheit - Boris Christoff (Vol.2)

1914 bei Sofia geboren begann er nach einer Karriere als Anwalt durch die Vermittlung von König Boris von Bulgarien ein Gesangsstudium in Italien bei Riccardo Stracciari. Sein Bühnendebut erfolgte 1946 als Colline in „La Bohème“ am Teatro Reggio Calabria. 1947 debütierte er an der Mailänder Scala als Pimen in „Boris Godunov'“. 1950 war er für Verdis „Don Carlo“ Rudolf Bings Wunschkandidat für dessen erste Saisoneröffnung an der Met, erhielt jedoch keine Einreisegenehmigung und wurde durch Cesare Siepi ersetzt. - Spätere Angebote lehnte er alle ab. In Amerika war er vor allem in San Francisco und in Chicago zu hören. Weitere Stationen seiner großen Karriere waren unter anderem Paris, die Arena in Verona, Covent Garden, Edinburgh, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, die Salzburger Festspiele, der Maggio Musicale (Florenz) und die Wiener Staatsoper. 1964 erkrankte er an einem Gehirntumor blieb aber weiter aktiv; auf dem Konzertpodium noch bis in die achtziger Jahre. 1993 starb er in Rom. Born in 1914 near Sofia he began a career as a lawyer and later was offered a scholarship by King Boris of Bulgaria to study singing in Italy with Riccardo Stracciari. His first operatic appearance took place in 1946 at the Teatro Reggio Calabria in “La Bohème”, his debut at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in the role of Pimen in 1947. He had been Rudolf Bing´s choice for the role of King Philip in the opening production of his first Met-season as General Manager in 1950, but it proved impossible to obtain a visa. Later offers from the Met were turned down. In America he mainly sang at the San Francisco Opera and in Chicago. Further important stages of his career included Paris, the Arena di Verona, Edinburgh, Covent Garden, the Salzburg Festival, the Maggio Musicale in Florence, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires and the Vienna State Opera. In 1964 he was suffering from a brain tumour, but continued his career; on the concert well into the Eighties. He died in Rome in 1993.
