Paperback Opera

This recording of "I Pagliacci" was the fifth version of the opera in recording history. The first one was recorded in 1907 in Milan; the "Orchestra diretta dall´Autore" accompanied such famous singers as Antonio Paoli (Canio), Josefina Huguet (Nedda), Francesco Cigada (Tonio) and Antonio Pini-Corsi (Silvio). The second version, which followed in 1908, was a German production with Ottokar Marak, Marie Dietrich, Comelis Bronsgeest and Carel van Hulst. In 1917 another recording was made in Milan, this time with Luigi Bolis, Annita Conti, Giuseppe Montanelli and Emesto Badini under the direction of Carlo Sabajno. He also conducted the first electric recording in 1929 which featured Alessandro Valente, Adelaide Saraceni, Apollo Granforte and Leonildo Basi. The cast of this recording from August 1930 was actually identical with that of the Scala, Milan production of 1929
