Lebendige Vergangenheit

Born in Moultrie, Georgia, in 1904 the tenor James Melton was called relatively late to the field of opera, having been one of the most successful pop singers of his time in his earlier career (as a member of the “Revelers”, for instance). before he made his surprising operatic debut in 1938 at the Cincinnati Opera, where he sang Puccini’s Pinkerton. The reviews were ecstatic. In the years that followed, Melton also appeared in Chicago and with the San Carlo Opera Company. At the Met, he made his debut as Tamino in 1942 and remained one of the leading lyric tenors at the Met for the rest of the decade. This was the apogee of Melton’s career. But he did not survive the transition at the Met from Edward Johnson to Rudolf Bing as general manager. Soon he found himself giving fewer concerts and increasingly began to sing in nightclubs. Melton began having drug and alcohol problems and died with a mountain of debt in 1961.
