Born in Mainz in 1920, Neidlinger began three years of vocal studies in 1931 and was hired in 1934 to sing for two years in Plauen. Then followed 14 years at the Hamburg Staatsoper and 27 at the Staatstheater in Stuttgart. He sang 20 seasons at the Bayreuth Festival and for a quarter of a century made guest appearances at all of the world’s great houses. There were none for Heldenbariton that he could not sing: Alberich and Wotan, Klingsor and Amfortas, Faninal and Ochs, Sachs, Boris, Mephisto, Amonasro, Scarpia - there seemed to be no limit. All that he was lacking was ambition and the ability to assert himself with his “friends” and “patrons”. In 1977 he retired from the stage.
